BMI calculator FAQ
What is a healthy BMI?
For most adults, 18.5–24.9 is the range labelled “healthy weight,” 25–29.9 “overweight,” and 30+ “obesity.” It is a population screen, not a personal diagnosis. Use it as one data point and talk to your doctor about what it means for you.
Is BMI accurate for everyone?
No. BMI can’t tell muscle from fat, so athletes and very muscular people often read “overweight” while being lean. It also ignores where fat sits, and healthy ranges shift with age, sex and ethnicity.
What does BMI miss?
Body composition, waist size and fat distribution, and your overall health picture — blood pressure, bloods, activity and history. A clinician reads BMI alongside those, not on its own.
What should I do with my BMI?
Treat it as a starting point. If it flags a concern, that’s a prompt for a closer look with a professional — not a verdict. The tool shows your healthy-weight range so you have context.
Educational screening only — BMI is a rough population measure, not a diagnosis and not individualized advice. Talk to your doctor.
